On Blogs

I got an email.

"Your doing a blog? Why? They're so over!"

Sorry, but I don't think they are. I think there will always be room for a good blog. I am not saying that this is a good blog, but I hope that it will, one day, be considered to be a good blog.

But other people, not in the know, have no idea what a blog is (Not really surprising. I work with people who've never even HEARD of the Fringe Festival).

To begin with, the word "Blog" is a contraction/abbreviation of the words "Web log" or Weblog. A Blog is really a journal... sometimes little more than a diary. Blogs are a place for people to speak their minds on subjects that are important to them. Some Blogs focus on one specific subject, some will be about a certain category of subjects. I regularly read several that actually motivated me into creating a Blog of my own. Here are my top three:

Daring Fireball -  John Gruber updates this blog several times a day, highlighting bits of news. It tends to lean toward technology news, and even more so toward Apple. Don't let that scare you away. His insight is educated and relatively well-balanced. Check him out at: http://daringfireball.net/

CWOB - Andy Ihnatko's Complete Waste of Bandwidth became the Colossal Waste of Bandwidth, and is now the Celestial Waste of Bandwidth. Internationally beloved technology columnist for the Chicago Sun Times, he is probably best know for his appearance on many of Leo LaPorte's NetCasts (I'll touch on NetCasts, podcasts and Leo in later postings). People who know me and have read/listened to Andy have asked if we were separated at birth, and I must confess I hear him saying things that I would definitely say, if I hadn't already said them. A biting sense of intelligent humour, and twisted sense of propriety make Andy a great writer. Check out his weekly rants at: http://ihnatko.com/

The Night Photography Blog by Andy Frazer - Andy Frazer's night photography focuses on abandoned buildings, the urban landscape and the ocean. He's not afraid of the dark, and he doesn't like watching television at night. As someone who has been into photography since I was 5, and who only recently got a Digital SLR, I have found this blog fascinating. Posting every few days, check him out at: http://gorillasites.blogspot.com/

I confess that, besides being a day late, this was not a great Blog posting. I confess to having a migraine for a couple of days, and not really feeling like sitting upright at a computer. A sad excuse, I know, but there you have it.

This is really the last of my "introductory" Blog postings. I plan to be "full swing" by next Friday.

Hope to see you then!
